WNC’s Green Policy: Green Design, Environmental Consciousness, Green Processes, Customer Satisfaction, Regulatory Compliance and Pursuit of Excellence and Innovation.

WNC’s business belongs to a technology-intensive industry of research and development. Since the manufacturing processes only includes SMT (Surface Mount Technology), precision assembly, testing, research and developing, etc, it is relatively rare to generate waste gases, waste water, undesirable noise, toxic substances or other pollutants. In addition, except CO2 exhausted due to electric power consumption, there are no other air pollutants generated, such as NOX, SOX and more. As for disposing of waste material, WNC invites only professional officers recognized by the Environment Protection Administration (EPA) and makes related declarations online as required to ensure that there is no contamination to the environment. WNC implements all applicable pollution prevention tasks in a positive cycle under its well-prepared management system and regularly inspects the waste treatment plant to ensure its proper operation. Furthermore, it continuously carries out systematic operation management scheme to improve the environmental security and sanitation levels. For all reasons, WNC has obtained the ISO 14001:2004 Environment Management System Certification in November, 2005.

Green Management Organization and System

In order to pursue the highest business profits with a minimized impact to the environment, WNC has established the Quality System and Green Product Management Department to enforce WNC green policies. The responsibilities of the special department include establishing and maintaining green product manufacturing processes and management systems, formulating and implementing relative standards, coordinating operations between R&D departments and different manufacturing plants, and finally, periodically auditing supplier performance on green policy implementation while bringing their environmental regulations into its management system.

In addition, WNC has obtained the IECQ QC080000 Certification in June, 2011. Released by IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) in October, 2005, the IECQ QC080000 Certification is an international certified standard for hazardous substances management of green product based on the ISO9001 standard. WNC will continuously strive for various types of certifications in this field, aiming to work within the corresponding international standards for green product.

Green Product Management

Nowadays, the environmental protection awareness has been raised all over the world, and manufacturers attach great importance to sustainable operations. In response to the requirements of international environmental protection directives and standards for restricted usage of environmental hazardous substances from specific customers, WNC has introduced the green product management system since 2005. According to international environmental protection directives (such as RoHS) and requirements for restricted usage of environmentally hazardous substances from primary customers, WNC has set up a control list of hazardous substances, which helps manage materials within factories and raw materials of manufacturing processes through the supplier side. For products constrained by relevant directives or by the customers themselves, WNC specifies management procedures, implements lead-free processes and utilizes XRF equipment for the inspection of incoming materials. All measures are helpful for WNC to perform a reliable and rigorous measurement and monitoring of environmentally hazardous substances in raw materials and products from product design stage through the entire production process.

Furthermore, regarding the three aspects of chemical substances, energy efficiency and recycling, WNC utilizes LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) methods and concepts to assist customers in producing green products that have less negative impact to the environment. Through green procurement and communications, WNC cooperates with its suppliers to set up a green supply chain, aiming to enhance the overall sustainable competitiveness of its supply chain.

After the implementation of green product management system, WNC was officially honored with the Green Partner certificate by SONY in 2007 and has, to date, consistently passed all its annual authentications. WNC has also successively recognized by other primary customers as green partner, including nearly 50 famous companies like Acer, Apple, Buffalo, BenQ, HTC, Motorola, Inventec, etc. All of these definitely demonstrate that WNC’s endeavors in environmental hazardous substances management have been recognized by most customers. In recent years, WNC has increasingly highlighted its green and energy-effective products as one of its key development projects. In 2010, WNC provided 2.210 finished products conforming to the requirements of environment related directives and standards raised by its customers. Under the trend of manufacturing Halogen-Free products, WNC enforces the Halogen-Free standards into the production processes as customer required, in order to reduce the negative impact to the environment during production processes.  In 2010, WNC accomplished 51 finished products conforming to Halogen-Free standards during production.

WNC Green Product Management Flow

In addition, WNC makes great efforts to develop and manufacture green products, which are compliance to the environmentally-friendly requirements such as low toxicity, low pollution, energy efficiency, resource efficiency and easy recycling. Even in the final packaging and delivery stage, recyclable packaging materials like paper or plastics are utilized. WNC completely forbids the use of six restricted substances including Pb、Cd、Hg、Cr6、PBB、PBDE as RoHS standards required for packaging materials. Plastic materials containing PVC are also prohibited. Meanwhile, WNC takes measures to reduce the packaging volume and changes the packaging stacking method to increase the overall loading capability. To carry out garbage sorting and waste reduction measures, WNC sets waste storage areas that conforming to related standards. In 2010, WNC did not experience any significant leakage accidents or receive any penalties or fines for violations of environmental protection regulations. The following form shows the total weights of wastes in different categories WNC generated in 2010.

Eco-Design Requirements of Energy-Using Products

WNC has accomplished the training of the Directive of Eco-design Requirements of Energy-using Products (EuP) led by the IDB (Industrial Development Bureau) of the MEA (Ministry of Economic Affairs) in 2009. WNC transforms the pursuit of eco-design into a fundamental requirement and considers environmental protection factors in the earliest stages of product design and development. With product LCA (life cycle assessment) principles at the forefront, WNC identifies various eco-design parameters such as hazardous substance restriction, energy efficiency, recycling and reuse, environmental impact and so on. Meanwhile, WNC raises the requirements on the supplier side to ensure that design components meet the eco-design requirements of energy-using products as specified by WNC.

Carbon Footprint / Carbon Disclosure Programs

Climate change caused by global warming has already impacted the natural ecosystem. Facing the influence of climate change on corporate operations and increasingly stringent international conventions and regulations for carbon emissions control, carbon emissions management and relevant information disclosure are becoming increasingly important. At the same time, the carbon footprint measurement of products becomes an effective method for enterprises to reduce CO₂ emissions. WNC has successively established a carbon partnership with some customers and suppliers. WNC proactively participates in carbon emissions related training and performs carbon emissions inventory and reduction plans, as well as joins the CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project). In 2010, WNC accomplished 3 projects that assist customers to perform product carbon footprint inventory and disclosure procedures. Likewise, WNC will continuously implement carbon footprint inventory in respond to customer requirements for all products.

Since January 2010, WNC has integrated its operation headquarters with the new operation building located at 20 Park Avenue II in Hsinchu Science Park. For this reason, WNC will take the GHG (greenhouse gas) inventory results in 2010 as the inspection criterion to continuously implement annual GHG inventory. In addition, it will set up the target and relative measures for GHG emissions to ensure the effectiveness of GHG emissions reduction programs.

Energy Efficient Working Environment

Even in the early construction stage of its new operation building, WNC takes environmentally-friendly and energy saving characteristics as its main pursuits. For this reason, the new operation building is designed in a full-open style with natural sunlight all round. Made of LOW-E glass with a specification of 8+12A+8mm, the exterior walls of glass curtain can provide energy saving capability. With the natural and simple designing concept, the hall of the building is styled in extremely wide and high spaces as well as glass curtain walls. Therefore, under the normal weather condition, the hall can remain brightness and comfort in the daytime without enlightening electric lamps. In addition, in order to reduce the use of air conditioners during periods of strong sunshine, all exterior parts of the ground floor are designed with the setback line and grilles for both eye-catching and sun-shielding benefits.

The main energy WNC utilizes is electric power. Besides this, it also uses a small amount of diesel fuel as the spare fuel for emergency generators as well as gas cans for cooking in the staff kitchen. According to the statistics, in 2010, WNC’s overall power consumption reached nearly 12,900,000kW/h while the total water usage came to 63,711 cubic meters. Since WNC’s business belongs to a technology-intensive industry of research and development, no water waste is generated during its production processes. In 2010, there was a total of 40,681 tons of water waste discharged, which all are domestic waste.  WNC’s water management measures are mainly oriented in two ways, including water consumption reduction as well as recycling and reuse.
